Exam Preparation - Ultrasound

Obstetrical Ultrasound

  • Drink at least 4 glasses of water (non-carbonated) half an hour prior to exam.

Abdominal and Renal Ultrasounds

  • Fast for 8 hours (no drinking, no eating or smoking) before the examination unless this examination is accompanied by a pelvic ultrasound. If you must take medications, take them with the least possible water.
  • An abdominal ultrasound should not be done 4-5 days after a barium test or endoscopic examination.

Pelvic Ultrasound

  • You must arrive at your examination with a full bladder. Drink at least 4 glasses of water one hour prior to the examination.
  • Do not urinate.
  • Pelvic ultrasound should not be done 4-5 days after a barium test or endoscopic examination.

Endovaginal Ultrasound

  • An endovaginal ultrasound should not be done 4-5 days after a barium test or endoscopic examination.

Prostate Ultrasound

  • You must purchase an enema from the pharmacy. An enema is used to clean the bowel before the ultrasound.
  • The morning of your exam, drink preparation (follow the instructions on the bottle).
  • You do not need a full bladder for this exam

Bring:

  • The doctor’s request.
  • Your old ultrasound report which will allow a comparison if need be.
