Exam Preparation - MRI
How should I prepare for the procedure?
You may be asked to wear a gown during the exam or you may be allowed to wear your own clothing if it is loose-fitting and has no metal fasteners.
Guidelines about eating and drinking before an MRI exam vary with the specific exam and also with the facility. Unless you are told otherwise, you may follow your regular daily routine and take medications as usual.
MRI without injection of contrast:
- Arrive at the clinic 15 minutes before your appointment
- no fasting necessary
MRI with injection of contrast:
- Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment
- 3 hours fasting
MRCP (MRI of the biliary tract):
- 12 hours fasting before MRI exam
Breast MRI without injection of contrast (for implant):
- No specific preparation
Breast MRI with injection of contrast:
- Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment
- 3 hours fasting
- Bring your previous mammogram report and/or ultrasound report
- The exam has to be done between day 7 and 14 after the first day of your period
- Stop any hormones you are taking (oestrogen, progesterone, tamoxifen) 4 weeks before having your exam
Arthro-MRI:
- Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment
- 3 hours fasting
- No pain killer the day of your exam
- Bring your previous reports
- You won’t be allowed to drive for the next 12 hours
